Zitec's “Alegeri.TV” project becomes the most powerful political site in Romania.
With over 70.000 unique visitors in the election period and about 15.000 on the euro-elections day, Alegeri.TV was ranked in the top five most significant web traffic growths in Romania, according to Trafic.ro website, outrunning important sites such as the National Television Station's website, www.tvr.ro.
The visitors’ interest is justified by the existence of a segment of the electorate who votes (or decides not to vote) strictly on the basis of the political offer. This segment is immune to current marketing campaigns, like the traditional and expensive leaflets that don't say anything, the advertising banners that fill the streets of towns and the walls of buildings, or the classic TV talk shows, whose popularity are decreasing.
Interest around the project validates a new concept of change in the way a classical election campaign is seen. Traditionally, one of the main factors for absenteeism in the vote is the voters’ perception of the lack of interest from the politicians for the real issues of citizens. Through Alegeri.TV, all voters have the opportunity to meet prospective candidates, to ask direct questions and then vote in an informed choice.
Alegeri.TV provides the first conclusions on the quality of candidates in euro-elections, as well as on the perception of the electorate on political parties, after the publication of the Alegeri.TV electoral interviews. Thus, officials estimated that the PNTCD failure was expected because of the low interest shown on Alegeri.TV pages for content from the party and candidates. With only 108 and 409 views respectively, Ovidiu Tomescu and Mircea Schean did not manage to arouse the interest of the electorate. On the other hand, Cristian Preda, candidate of the PD-L party, had over 35.000 views, totaling over 500 hours of video broadcast (statistics provided by www.VideoPublishing.com).
Another trend is the increased interest for new candidates: Ionel Muscalu from PNL party, recorded almost 5 times more views than Norica Nicolai’s profile, surprising if we think that she was on the first position on the party list in the elections. Elena Basescu recorded 12,000 profile views at Alegeri.TV in about a month, while the profile of the candidate Gigi Becali from the PRM party, at Alegeri.TV, in about 2 years, has been viewed by 18.600 users of the site.
The approximately 100,000 views of the Alegeri.TV video productions demonstrate that an increasing trend of active voters, who visit the site regularly for various sources of information, come to an opinion and vote accordingly. On the other hand, most candidates who responded to the questions addressed by Alegeri.TV were chosen to represent Romania in the European Parliament. "The Alegeri.TV video interviews with candidates at the European Parlament elections had an average of over 3000 views but there were interviews with over 30,000 views.
We are glad that some candidates have used Alegeri.TV interviews on their own blogs, or in their election campaign pages. Surely there is a need for political dialogue with the electorate, a so-called bargaining of votes in a civilized manner, which is not satisfied by traditional channels of communication. We are also decided to give, in the future, a chance to all politicians to present themselves on Alegeri.TV, as we are decided to offer the electorate the possibility to enter in a dialogue with politicians.
The potential exists: in the past two years we have registered over 600.000 visits and constant growth. Despite the decreasing degree of participation to the voting process, Alegeri.TV has doubled the number of visitors since the European elections 2007 "stated Alexandru Lapusan, CEO at Zitec, the company supporting the project. Alegeri.TV impartially centralizes and presents discussion forums and debates, video presentations and blogs, news from the political staff of politicians or political parties, analysts and political commentators in the field, but also presents dialogues between the electorate and the politicians . In addition, site users can watch the politician history and statistical information on the work of former Members of the European Parliament (MEP), who have a candidate, or not, on June 7. Answers of the candidates in the European elections 2009 are posted, in video or text, in the pages dedicated to each candidate.
